A main motion introduces a new item of business for consideration. It is the foundation of parliamentary procedure.
Stand and address the chair: "Mr./Madam Chair". Wait to be recognized. Say "I move that..." followed by your proposal.
Main motions require a second, are debatable, can be amended, and typically require a majority vote to pass.
"I move that the club donate $500 to the local food bank." Another member says "Second!" The chair then opens debate.
